Welfarewell centres on Esmerelda, an 80 year old Shakespearean actress, who is struggling to make ends meet. When her beloved cat, Merlin, dies, she can only bury him in the backyard but is stopped by her objectionable landlord. He has her arrested and she spends a night in jail … which comes with heat, food, a place to sleep, etc. Hmmmm! How to stay longer? Rob a bank???
