Black Box Set Theatre Festival I

Fiona Currie

The Black Box Set Theatre Festival is made up of one-act plays that have been touring the country to great acclaim. The shows are presented either later in the evening, after our core shows, or during down-time between the core shows.

The Last Goddamned Performance Piece

by Jayson McDonald

Starring Ben Meuser and Celine Filion

February 23-25 and March 1-3, 2012 at 10 p.m.

Stay late and catch a performance of up-and-coming London, Ontario, playwright Jayson McDonald’s play about the break up of a performance art group, and a break up of a more personal nature. Nominated for a 2010 Rideau Award (Best Fringe Production).
“Supremely skilled performances by the play’s two actors draw you into the story, even though that story is never explicitly told”, “A production that is so professional it appears to be entirely off-the-cuff.” (FullyFringed.ca)

Third Time Lucky

Created and performed by Paul Hutcheson

March 9, 10, 16 and 17, 2012 at 10 p.m.

Stay late and catch a performance of Third Time Lucky by Toronto-based comic storyteller Paul Hutcheson. Hutcheson has performed in more than 25 fringe festivals, winning awards in New York, San Francisco, Montreal & Ottawa. His physical humour has been compared to Jim Carrey “only not obnoxious” (CBC Winnipeg) and his writing to David Sedaris.

Giant Invisible Robot

Created and performed by Jayson McDonald

Directed by Scott Holden

March 13-17, 2012 at 8 p.m.

Jayson McDonald’s story of a painfully shy man and his compulsively destructive invisible robot has charmed audiences across Canada. He brings it back to Ottawa for this limited engagement. “Deeply affecting… McDonald is a manic chameleon capable of making us howl with laughter one second, and well up with tears the next.” (Winnipeg Sun)
